Strike is Priscilla Sanderson's first single on her debut album, Strike. It was released on July 15, 2015. Her sister, Elle Sanderson "Dona Elle," is featured in this song.

Meaning

During an interview, Priscilla Sanderson claimed that this song is about "breaking free and shaking off the things you once thought were important, but really they aren't. Like... changing your focus to what really matters." Many Arianators and Swifties assumed that she was just dissing Ariana and Taylor, but she has later cleared this up. In reality, this song was just made from some lyrics she threw together, and she thought it was catchy. The songs true meaning was created way after the song was made, but she still has not revealed it to the public. However, leaked videos of her talking to her sister, Elle, showing her saying, "No, I just came up with it. Yeah, it's sort of based on my life, but not exactly." Recently, she plainly said "it's about my relationship", but that is not clearly shown in the song whatsoever.

However, there is another possibility. This song was originally going to be used for the movie, "Hidden Love", but the movie's writers found that this song was too "unrelating to [Mariananasa Oquer]'s personality" so it was removed from the film. Sanderson's song, Hidden View, was used in place of it. This may show the meaning of Strike though.

Criticism

Many people noticed that this song is extremely similar to "Fight Song", just with different lyrics. Since Sanderson has previously mentioned that the song is not fully based on real experiences, some people feel that she is taking away from the meaning of music. Here is the text of a twitter comment asking Priscilla what it is about (rudely), and Priscilla's ugly response.

Twitter User "bellsoffirering": "Woah Sanderson, why don't you just say what this song is about? You just made a meaningless song didn't you!"
Priscilla Sanderson; Twitter User "priscillasanderson": It does have a meaning. Come on fire girl, chill it already! 3 strikes, YOU are out! Also, I'm more popular than you, k?"

Lyrics

[Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I strike the drum

I strike for love

I strike to bring

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing

[Verse 1]: Priscilla Sanderson

You wanted me to sing your song

But you wanted my life to prolong

If you hadn't brought the end

Then I wouldn't have made it past the bend

[Pre-Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I try to break free; I try to get away

But it's a part of me, and so I say

[Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I strike the drum

I strike for love

I strike to bring

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing

[Verse 2]: Priscilla Sanderson

You made me think that I could take it

But the truth is that I am breaking

You made me choose what to like

But now that I know, I don't feel so right

[Pre-Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I try to break free; I try to get away

But it's a part of me, and so I say

[Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I strike the drum

I strike for love

I strike to bring

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing

[Bridge]: Dona Elle

Please don't bring me back to when

I didn't know what could happen

When you make a small mistake

It can change your life, and you'll be saddened

If I held on to what matters

Then I could have been here so much sooner

Should I keep going on like this

Or is something there for me, something so much better

[Pre-Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I try to break free; I try to get away

But it's a part of me, and so I say

[Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I strike the drum

I strike for love

I strike to bring

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing

[Chorus]: Priscilla Sanderson

I strike the drum

I strike for love

I strike to bring

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing

[Coda]: Priscilla Sanderson and Dona Elle

Everything I sing, oh! Everything I sing
